How to invoice U.S. clients when your team is in Ukraine
Ukrainian IT specialists work with U.S. clients every day. Often it's simple: you sign a contract as a Ukrainian sole proprietor (FOP) or company, send an invoice and receive the payment.
Sometimes the client's finance or procurement team wants something else: a U.S. vendor, a W-9, a U.S. invoice or a payment within the U.S. banking system. This page is a practical overview, not legal or tax advice.
Common setups
| Setup | When it works | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Direct contract (FOP or company) | The client accepts foreign vendors | Bank paperwork, currency control, the client's procurement rules |
| Freelance platform | Small or one-off projects | Platform fees and rules |
| Your own U.S. LLC | Steady U.S. revenue, ready to maintain a company | Registration, bookkeeping, U.S. filings; consult a specialist |
| U.S. contracting party (BlueRock) | The client requires a U.S. vendor; you don't want your own company in the U.S. | 5% of turnover; the role is set by the agreement |
When a U.S. contracting party makes sense
- The client has already said: “we only work with U.S. vendors”.
- One or two U.S. projects don't yet justify setting up and maintaining your own LLC.
- You want a person who knows your project, not a ticket queue.
How your team gets paid
BlueRock pays your team by SWIFT bank transfer (including to a registered company in Ukraine), Wise or crypto, whichever suits you. Bank transfer fees, both for the incoming client payment and for the payout to your team, are covered by BlueRock out of its 5%.
Before you choose
Check with your accountant in Ukraine how the income will be treated on your side (FOP group, currency control). BlueRock doesn't give tax advice.
Questions
Can I keep my FOP and still work through BlueRock?
Your side of the setup is between you and your accountant. BlueRock's agreement with you sets out how and when we pay you.
Is this only for Ukraine?
No. The same model works for teams in Poland, other EU countries and specialists living legally in the EU. We don't work with sanctioned persons or companies, or with businesses operating from Russia.
Is there a minimum project size?
No. We look at projects from about $800 up to $20,000 and more.
